The Doss Healthy Lifestyles Committee supports a number of school activities and initiatives to help the entire Doss community make better food choices, get active, and learn ways to stay physically and emotionally healthy. The Healthy Lifestyles Committee is comprised of parents, teachers, staff, administration, and students.

The Healthy Lifestyles team has two exciting events coming up for the whole family.

On April 27, 2017 @ 5:30 PM, we will be hosting a Doss Family Fitness Night and Pep Rally. This event is going to be a fun evening of health-focused activities including drills from Coach Mo, Yoga with the Doss Yogis, Running Games with the Doss Run Club, and more. T-Shirts will be available for purchase at the event for the fun run along with  on-site registration for the run. We encourage all students to wear their sports uniforms and spirit gear.

Trojan Trek!
Doss will hold our inaugural Fun Run with our friends from Hill Elementary. The run will be called TROJAN TREK! Join us for this fun, family-friendly, 1 mile run at Anderson High School. Each school will have a different colored shirt so be sure to get yours at Family Fitness Night and show up for the event so our Doss Pride shines! Registration for the run is free, and we will offer registration online until May 4.

Other Activities and Initiatives supported by the Doss Healthy Lifestyles Committee include:

Marathon Kids

We are supporting a new model for Marathon Kids this year where each student is being asked to complete four marathons (104.8 miles) over the course of a school year.  This amount corresponds with the recommendation that children should get 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise EVERY DAY.  This year we will be announcing a partnership between students, parents, and teachers that help children reach and celebrate their accomplishments in and out of school.

Doss Owls Run

We have created a community calendar featuring all the family-friendly runs available around Austin.  Once a month, the Healthy Lifestyles Committee will create a team of Doss Owls so students, parents, teachers, and staff can all run together and demonstrate healthy choices outside of school.  Check out our calendar and look out for events to be announced in the BLAST.

Veggie Tastings and Farmer Visits

Doss Cafeteria, The Sustainable Food Center of Austin, and the Healthy Lifestyles Committee work together to bring veggie tastings to Doss students. Fresh vegetable samples are provided for students to try during the school day. Students are able to visit with a farmer and learn more about healthy food choices and where food comes from. Veggie Tastings and Farmer provide opportunities for students to try vegetables.  More information about The Sustainable Food Center of Austin can be found at http://sustainablefoodcenter.org.

My Lunch ROCKS

Our committee is working in conjunction with the TMF Foundation to reward students for making healthy eating choices in the cafeteria during their lunch.  More information about this program can be found at https://www.tmffoundation.org/My-Lunch-Rocks.

CATCH

The Eat Smart Program for the Coordinated Approach to Child Health also known at CATCH. Your child is learning about GO, SLOW, and WHOA foods in school. This program teaches them which foods are good to eat all of the time vs. those foods that they should eat only some of the time. For more information go to http://www.catchinfo.org.  You can also use the following to help encourage healthy habits at home: CATCH Healthy Habits at Home Worksheet

School & Playground Improvements

As Doss’ population has increased, the Doss Track became smaller and smaller. Doss Healthy Lifestyles Committee created a new trail space around the Doss Playground.  The track is ⅛ of a mile and we continue to depend on volunteer support to maintain the track and ensure it is a safe and useful area for students and staff to walk and run.

We are also embarking on several new initiatives this year including installing water bottle fillers around campus, resurfacing the basketball court by the playground, and a potential new soccer field.
