Read Across Doss Past Events

Author Kate Milford is coming to Doss on October 20!

On October 20, Author Kate Milford will visit with Doss third and fourth graders about her latest book, Ghosts of Greenglass House, where thirteen-year-old Milo is, once again, spending the winter holidays stuck in a house full of strange guests who are not what they seem. Like its predecessor, Greenglass House (which was long-listed for the National Book Award in 2014), it is a suspenseful tale that offers ghosts, friendships, and a cast of unforgettable characters, all wrapped up in a cozy mystery. Originally from Annapolis, Kate Milford now splits her time between Brooklyn and the Magothy coast. Her other books include The Boneshaker, The Broken Lands, and The Left-Handed Fate.

Doss Welcomes Local Author James Crowley!

On October 27, Austin author James Crowley will visit with Doss 4th and 5th graders about his latest book, Monsterland.  In the book, it’s Halloween, and everyone in Charlie’s small town is excited for the festivities. Charlie’s grandfather is famous for his holiday haunts, and his pumpkin patch is the center of the town’s zealous celebrations. But for Charlie, Halloween is just one more reminder that his cousin Billy isn’t around anymore. When Charlie runs into the woods to escape some neighborhood bullies, he gets lost and finds himself entering Monsterland—a mysterious place where werewolves live amongst trolls and goblins. Here he meets a vampire who tells Charlie he may be able to see his cousin again in this strange new land. Determined to find out just what happened to Billy, Charlie sets off to explore the secrets hiding in this uncharted territory.

RAD and BookPeople are pleased to bring Jory John to our kindergartners and first graders! He will be sharing his newest picture books. If you would like to purchase these titles, please use the Jory John – Order Form or go to  to access BookPeople’s new portal.

I Love You Already:
This is the second hilarious picture book about Bear and Duck. Bear can’t wait to spend a pleasant day by himself. His persistent next-door neighbor, Duck, wants to take a morning stroll . . . with Bear. He just wants Bear to like him already. . . .

Goodnight Already:
Meet Bear. He’s exhausted. All he wants is to go to sleep. Meet Duck, Bear’s persistent next-door neighbor. All he wants is to hang out . . . with Bear. This is another wonderful, and hilarious, addition to bedtime reading.

Jory John occasionally wants to stay inside with his books, music, couch, and snacks, so he knows exactly how the bear feels. Then again, sometimes he’s restless and wants some company, so he knows exactly how the duck feels. He’s coauthor of the Terrible Two series and many other books. He lives (and writes) in the Bay Area. Jory will be at Doss on Wednesday, February 3rd to speak with kindergarten and first grade.

This year we are trying something different for the Winter Reading Program.

BookSpring has allowed us to hold our Read-A-Thon early so that we can have it in conjunction with our traditional Winter Reading Program. We are hoping that this increases participation for both programs. A combined reading log will go home with students on December 16th. Students may use this single log for either, or both, programs. Those wishing to participate in BookSpring’s Read-A-Thon will be required to register on BookSpring’s website at that time as well.

For those not familiar with these programs, the Winter Reading Program is through the Doss library and also required by many teachers. Students are to log all of their reading over the winter break and then turn the log into the library for a special treat upon return to school in January.

BookSpring’s Read-A-Thon is an annual citywide program where during the two week event, students read and collect donations based on the number of minutes they read. The donations buy books and support BookSpring’s childhood literacy programs in the Greater Austin area.

This year, the Doss Winter Reading Program/BookSpring Read-A-Thon will run from December 19-January 4. Please contact Katie Kinzy at with any questions or go to for more information about the Read-A-Thon.

In the Doss library next Friday, October 23rd at 8:30am, RAD will host author Geoff Rodkey, an Emmy-nominated film and television writer, for 3rd-4th grade classes.

Mr. Rodkey’s previous work includes the trilogy Chronicles of Egg, the Disney Channel TV movie Good Luck Charlie, It’s Christmas, the educational video game Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, and hit movies such as Daddy Day Care.

His new series The Tapper Twins follows 12-year-old fraternal twins Claudia and Reese through escapades such as a sibling prank war and a charity scavenger hunt that will have kids and parents laughing out loud. Autographed copies of both books (The Tapper Twins Go To War and The Tapper Twins Tear Up New York) are available for $15.15 each.

Please preorder books using the form attached here.  We promise that your kids are going to want to laugh to this book!

Read Across Doss is excited to present bestselling author Gene Luen Yang with his new book Secret Coders!

Mr. Yang will give a presentation in the Doss library for our 3rd through 5th graders on October 2nd.

RADical Winter Reading Program for Doss Owls

To participate, students read during break from December 20-January 6.  Families may read to the student, as needed, for Kindergarteners and pre-readers.

Record how many minutes the student reads on the log.  Winter Reading is available here.  Print a copy at home or find a copy in our Doss library.

Reach grade level goals.

Students in K, 1st, 2nd participate by continuing to read 20 minutes each day for 10 days, or more.  Younger readers improve best with daily practice.

Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades participate by reading a minimum of 300 minutes.  These students can read 30 minutes each day for 10 days or any other combination to reach at least 300 total minutes.

The final step is to return the log to the library on or before Friday, January 9, 2015.

Various prizes are available to RADical Winter Readers!
