Lego Mindstorm Club flyer

4th and 5th grade students are invited to join Doss’ Robot Club.  We’ll use Lego Mindstorms NXT kits developed by Lego and National Instruments to teach kids how to build and program robots.  In the process we plan to have a lot of fun and generate interest in science, math, and engineering.

Starting September 25th, the club will meet in the computer lab at Doss every Wednesday from 3 to 4pm.

Check out our new website for more information, some cool videos showing what Lego Mindstorms can do, and to view upcoming assignments for the club.

General Info

The Doss Robot Club committee helps students learn how to build and program robots. The main goal is to increase the student interest in making robots that are autonomous (no remote control or human guidance) and can execute simple tasks according to a sequence of instructions using a graphical programming language.

The club is for 4th and 5th graders and will use the Lego Mindstorms NXT kit. Students are encouraged to work from home after the club meets to solve interesting programming assignments.

To participate, the child will need a Lego Mindstorms NXT kit.  Kits are generally around $350.  The Lego Store at Barton Creek Square tells me that they are usually in store for pickup.  Alternatively, they can be purchased online directly from Lego.  The latest version of the kit is “EV3″ or “3.0″ but our club will accommodate any version of the Mindstorms kit.  Although the kit is a little expensive, the Robots 2 Doss club is always free and the kit will be yours to keep once the club is done.

Parents are encouraged to assist the kids at home. We would like to post technical challenges that will require the help of family members. The instructors are engineers from National Instruments, a company located north of Austin that has participated with Lego in the development of this educational kit. Feel free to ask questions.
