Attention Doss scientists!  It’s time to get ready for another great Doss Science Fair.  The gym will be filled with your creative projects from all grade levels, K-5.  Please read this page and open/print the science fair documents below because they are filled with good information.

Students who complete a project develop skills in critical thinking, research, problem solving, and the use of scientific methods.  They also become experts on their topic. Students are encouraged to participate in the Science Fair!

Students/parents who want more information can come to one of the help sessions offered after school on Tuesday, December 18th and Tuesday, January 8th from 3-4pm in the library.

NEW THIS YEAR: There will be a parent-only information session on November 14 thfrom 8-9am in Portable 20.  If you are new to Doss or new to the Science Fair, this is a great opportunity for you to get familiar with the process.  This will make it more fun for you and your kids!

Background Information

Projects are optional for Kindergarten, First, Second, and Third graders.  Students in third grade will do group projects in the classroom but may also submit an individual project.  Fourth and Fifth grades are required to complete a project for class (experiment only) and will receive an entire (hard copy) packet from their teacher for their experiment.

Step One

The three categories of projects to choose from for K-3 are:

Collection

Demonstration or Model

Experiment

Your student may use the “Helpful Resources” document below to research and choose a topic either at home or at school.  Your teacher will be glad to help your child.  Once your child has picked their topic, you can download the sample board and rubric that is relevant for your category.  You will only need the sample board and rubric for a collection, modelor experiment as you need to pick one of the three.  Studying the rubric in advance will help you know if your child has completed their project.

January 30th

On the morning of January 30th, each child who enters the fair will present their board to volunteer judges (that could be you!). By noon, all the judging is complete.

The gym will be open that evening from 6:00-7:30 for all Doss families to observe the awesome projects.  The cafeteria will be open to observe the kindergartener’s robots, too.  You won’t want to miss it!

Awards

At each grade level, multiple awards for first, second, and third place will be awarded based on the project requirements for each category.  Project requirements and judging criteria are included below.  Best of Show projects are chosen from each grade level to go on to the City Science Fair competition in February.

If you have any questions or need additional information, you may ask your science teacher or come to one of the help sessions.

In addition, if you need a hard copy of the science fair packet, please email:
