The Mission of the OWL Center

To create a free flowing area filled with native plants, trees, birds, flowers, insects and a variety of animals. This space will involve all parts of thecommunity for curricular studies, observation, reflection, and the plantingand caring of the environment.

The OWL (Outdoor Wildlife Learning) Center Committee pulls together parents, teachers, and naturalists who want to help build and maintain a place for Doss kids to learn and play in nature. Using plants native to Central Texas, the OWL Center incorporates the four elements of habitat (food, water, cover and places for wildlife to raise their young). Doss teachers will be able to use the area to teach about wildlife, science, art and other topics in a “hands on” environment.

Volunteers are needed to prepare, plant and maintain beds, find materials and donations, and obtain grants. If you are handy with a shovel and rake, willing to water on occasion, know about growing and maintaining native plants, have an interest in maintaining ponds, or want to help with art projects or lesson ideas, please help us throughout the year or just join us for a Work Day.

We will have two Work Days during the school year, one in the Fall and one in the Spring. The dates will be announced on the OWL Center Blog and in the weekly Doss blast.
