Principal Update 7/14

Good afternoon Doss parents and families!

It’s been an incredibly busy but enjoyable summer thus far.  In the early part of June, Ms. Wankel and several Doss teachers conducted summer school for many of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.  We were thankful to have each of them serving our students and for the low student/teacher ratios.  I and several members of our staff were also able to get the majority of hiring completed just before we left for a much needed break.  We are EXCITED for our families to meet our new staff!

Just after summer school, Mrs. Wolff and Ms. Turley accompanied me to the PLC conference in San Antonio for three days where we learned SO much about effective PLC processes and heard from some amazing speakers (thank you PTA for your support!).  As either of them will say, along with me, it was truly inspiring and energizing to attend.  We came away with a couple of focal points to support our campus for the 2022-2023 school year that will benefit our staff and students.  I hope to bring more teachers with us for next year’s conference.  Shortly after we returned I was able to take off with my family to CO.  I can truly say it was one of the first times we were able unwind and focus on being a family in a long time.  It was truly relaxing and great to reconnect. I hope you have or will be doing the same soon.

I and my administrative returned to work this week and are finalizing hiring and making adjustments to our campus systems.  I am thankful we are mostly fully staffed and are able to focus our energy on engaging professional development for our staff when they return on August 8.  One our focus points for this year is to renew our collaborative culture both with staff and our families.  I plan to make this an intentional and regular part of our professional learning this year.  Since we are now in a more COVID-safe place, I fully expect this year to be “normal” with all of the typical Doss traditions returning.  As always, I look forward to working closely with you and your students this year. 🙂  It should go without saying that I am VERY excited for the many great things that will happen at Doss this year.

Lastly, if you have not done so, I strongly encourage everyone to stay engaged and provide input to the community learning/feedback sessions regarding our proposed bond that could be approved by the end of July or sometime in August.  I am attaching both presentation from the sessions and side-by-side comparison for the two proposed packages.  Additionally, once the final package is approved, I will work with AISD and our PTA to host a Doss-specific bond information meeting in September both in person and virtually.  The purpose of this meeting will be to provide time to fully understand what could be on the November ballet and so you may ask questions.  You can expect to hear more about the bond in the coming months.  See below for available community engagement sessions this week:

  • Thursday, July 14, 6–8 p.m. (Virtual)
  • Saturday, July 16, 10 a.m.–12 p.m., Dobie Middle School, 1200 E Rundberg Ln, Austin, TX 78753
  • Saturday, July 16 at 1:30–3:30 p.m., Travis Early College High School, 1211 E. Oltorf St. Austin, TX 78704

I will continue to send out weekly parent messages from this point forward.  Should you have any questions for me, please do not hesitate to email me at nathan.steenport@austinisd.orgHave a wonderful weekend.
