Our school is named after a beloved Austin school teacher, Leona Doss. “Doss taught in Mathews school from 1927 to 1938, was coordinator of primary grades to 1939, taught at Rosedale school to 1940, Pease from 1940 to 1959, and taught at Mathews school from 1959 to 1967 when she became ill.”* “Doss Elementary was built and named for her in 1970. In addition to self-portraits, she loved painting owls. The owl became Doss Elementary School’s mascot.”**
