FAQ

What is the Doss Mandarin Immersion Program?
The Mandarin Immersion Program at Doss follows the 50/50 Immersion Model. It is a language acquisition program in which the students spend half of their day immersed in the Mandarin language. Math and Science are taught in Mandarin.

Who is a good fit?
Students who are confident and eager to learn are the best fit for this program. If you feel that your child might have reading difficulties or behavioral difficulties, asking them to learn another language might not be the best fit.

What is the daily schedule of a kinder student in the Mandarin Immersion Program?
Kinder students in Mandarin Immersion start their day in the English classroom with their English teacher. They have Language Arts and Social Studies instruction in English. Midday, they go to lunch as a class. Their Mandarin teacher picks them up from lunch and the rest of the day is spent learning Math and Science entirely in Mandarin.

Who is eligible for the program?
There are 2 requirements. First, you must reside in the Doss attendance zone prior to the application process beginning. We are a closed campus and are unable to make any exceptions to the zone policy or accept any transfers at this time. Secondly, parents must attend one information session with the principal prior to applying.

When are the required parent informational session?
Parents must attend one of the informational sessions in order to apply.

Childcare not available.

Is Kindergarten the only opportunity to get into the program?
The entry point into the program is Kindergarten. There are some years that a slot becomes available in grades 1-5. If this is the case, notification of open slots will be sent through living tree and posted on the dosspta.org website in early August 2020.

How do I register my child for the MCI program?
Registration is a two-step process. As early as January 3, 2020, you can complete the online registration at www.austinisd.org/registration. Secondly, during Kindergarten registration on March 7, 2020 you will bring in your child(ren) birth certificate, social security card, immunization records, parent/guardian photo ID, proof of address (city of austin or mortgage statement) to complete the application process. Late applications are unable to be accepted. If there are more applicants than spots, a lottery will be conducted.

I have an older child currently in the program. How do I register my incoming Kindergartener?
Incoming kinder students who have siblings in the program are automatically accepted into the program and only need to complete the online registration, bring in documentation, and sign their commitment letter. You are exempt from attending an information session. However, the timeline still applies.

When will I find out if my child was accepted to the MCI program?
Families will be notified on April 1, 2020. You will then be asked to sign a commitment letter. Once the commitment letter is complete, your child will be officially enrolled in the Doss Mandarin Immersion program. Any slots remaining will be filled in order of lottery placement.
