Good morning Doss Families –
A huge thank you to the Doss PTA for hosting such a fantastic adult fundraiser! We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our community and the support these donations will provide for our students. Doss truly is an outstanding place.
In addition to celebrating a successful event, we are proud to share that Doss Best Buddies was named Best Buddies Chapter of the Year this weekend. Congratulations to our students and staff who make this group so special, your commitment to fostering inclusion and belonging each day is inspiring.
During our recent parent-principal coffee, I shared the steps we are taking to strengthen our substitute systems. Quite simply, we must do better and we are taking immediate, intentional action to ensure the safety, consistency, and quality of our classrooms.
In our front office, we have implemented a communication system to notify clerks, administrators, and counselors whenever a new substitute arrives on campus. A member of our team will proactively visit the classroom to check in, offer support, and ensure expectations are being met. Additionally, our front office staff are screening all substitutes upon arrival, and any concerns, no matter how small, are immediately escalated to an administrator. We have added a Doss Substitute Quick Reference guide to ensure substitutes know who to ask for help with the office phone number and Doss’ expectations for students and staff.
We have also created a “Not a Preferred Sub” list at each front office desk to ensure that individuals who are not a good fit for our campus do not return.
Teachers are being asked to communicate proactively with families when they will be absent, including sharing the name of the substitute teacher. We are also encouraging teachers to invite parent volunteers on those days to provide an added layer of support and care in the classroom.
In situations where a teacher must call out unexpectedly and a preferred substitute is unavailable, we will divide students among the grade-level team to ensure they remain in a safe, supportive, and familiar environment.
Another topic we covered during the parent principal coffee was the current Austin ISD Budget crisis. I invite you to get involved by attending the community meetings and filling out the survey (survey closes April 30).

This week marks the last week of STAAR testing. 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will take the Math STAAR. Please ensure students arrive at school by 7:30am so they can settle in their classrooms before we start testing. Students need to get plenty of sleep the night before and have a healthy breakfast the morning of the test.
This week is Earth Week, and our student-led Green Team has come up with activities to honor Earth Week and remind us of how important it is for us to do our part.
Monday – students will sign an Earth Day Pledge
Tuesday – No Tech Tuesday
Wednesday – Walk or Bike to School and clean up the playground during recess
Thursday – Turn it off Thursday (turning off lights & devices when leaving a space) and pack lunches & snacks in containers
Friday – Wear Green or Blue

¡Muchísimas gracias al PTA de Doss por organizar una recaudación de fondos para adultos tan fantástica! Estamos increíblemente agradecidos por la generosidad de nuestra comunidad y por el apoyo que estas donaciones brindarán a nuestros estudiantes. Doss realmente es un lugar extraordinario.
Además de celebrar un evento exitoso, nos enorgullece compartir que Doss Best Buddies fue nombrado Capítulo del Año este fin de semana. Felicitaciones a nuestros estudiantes y personal que hacen que este grupo sea tan especial; su compromiso diario con fomentar la inclusión y el sentido de pertenencia es inspirador.
Durante nuestro reciente café entre padres y la directora, compartí los pasos que estamos tomando para fortalecer nuestros sistemas de sustitutos. En pocas palabras, debemos mejorar y estamos tomando medidas inmediatas e intencionales para garantizar la seguridad, la consistencia y la calidad en nuestras aulas.
En nuestra oficina principal, hemos implementado un sistema de comunicación para notificar a los empleados, administradores y consejeros cada vez que llega un nuevo maestro sustituto al campus. Un miembro de nuestro equipo visitará proactivamente el salón para verificar, ofrecer apoyo y asegurar que se estén cumpliendo las expectativas. Además, nuestro personal de oficina está evaluando a todos los sustitutos a su llegada, y cualquier inquietud, por pequeña que sea, se eleva de inmediato a un administrador. Hemos añadido una Guía Rápida para Sustitutos de Doss para asegurar que los sustitutos sepan a quién acudir para recibir ayuda, incluyendo el número de la oficina y las expectativas de Doss para estudiantes y personal.
También hemos creado una lista de “Sustitutos No Preferidos” en cada escritorio de la oficina para asegurar que las personas que no son adecuadas para nuestro campus no regresen.
Se les está pidiendo a los maestros que se comuniquen de manera proactiva con las familias cuando vayan a estar ausentes, incluyendo el nombre del maestro sustituto. También estamos animando a los maestros a invitar a padres voluntarios en esos días para brindar una capa adicional de apoyo y cuidado en el aula.
En situaciones en las que un maestro deba ausentarse inesperadamente y no haya un sustituto preferido disponible, distribuiremos a los estudiantes entre el equipo del mismo grado para asegurar que permanezcan en un ambiente seguro, de apoyo y familiar.
Otro tema que abordamos durante el café de padres y directora fue la actual crisis presupuestaria de Austin ISD. Los invito a involucrarse asistiendo a las reuniones comunitarias y completando la encuesta (la encuesta cierra el 30 de abril).

Esta semana marca la última semana de exámenes STAAR. Los estudiantes de 3.º, 4.º y 5.º grado tomarán el STAAR de matemáticas. Por favor asegúrense de que los estudiantes lleguen a la escuela a las 7:30 a.m. para que puedan acomodarse en sus salones antes de comenzar el examen. Es importante que duerman bien la noche anterior y tengan un desayuno saludable la mañana del examen.
Esta semana es la Semana de la Tierra, y nuestro equipo estudiantil Green Team ha organizado actividades para celebrarla y recordarnos lo importante que es que todos hagamos nuestra parte.
Lunes: los estudiantes firmarán un compromiso del Día de la Tierra
Martes: Martes sin tecnología
Miércoles: Caminar o ir en bicicleta a la escuela y limpiar el patio durante el recreo
Jueves: “Apágalo el jueves” (apagar luces y dispositivos al salir de un espacio) y traer almuerzos y bocadillos en recipientes reutilizables
Viernes: Vestir de verde o azul
